Why Choose Rubber Matting Rolls Over Tiles?

Feature Rubber Matting Rolls Rubber Tiles
Coverage Seamless in traffic direction — no joins to trip on or trap dirt Joints every 500mm or 1m — potential dirt and moisture traps
Installation Unroll, cut to length — simple. Loose-lay or bond with adhesive Requires edge trimming, layout planning, interlocking
Cost per m² Lower — fewer production steps than tile cutting Higher — additional manufacturing cost
Best for Corridors, walkways, long narrow areas, perimeter runs Rooms, open areas, areas needing reconfiguration
Replacement Replace whole run or cut in a new section Replace individual tiles — easier spot replacement
Waste Minimal — cut precisely to length needed Some waste at room edges from tile cutting

Rubber Matting Roll Compounds — Full Guide

SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) Rolls — Most Popular

The most widely used compound for indoor rubber matting rolls. Made from recycled rubber — an environmentally responsible choice. SBR provides excellent abrasion resistance, outstanding durability under heavy foot traffic and light vehicle use, and good general-purpose slip resistance. Use for: workshops, gyms, corridors, garages, general industrial. Avoid outdoors — SBR degrades rapidly under UV exposure.

    • Hardness: 60-70 Shore A
    • Temperature range: -20°C to +70°C
    • Service life: 15-25 years indoor
    • Price: Most affordable compound

EPDM Rubber Rolls — Outdoor and UV-Resistant

The correct specification for any outdoor, UV-exposed, or pool-side rubber matting roll installation. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is inherently UV and ozone stable — it will not crack, oxidise, or degrade outdoors. Used on thousands of UK public pathways, school approaches, sports facility walkways, and industrial external areas. Available in black and colours.

    • Temperature range: -40°C to +120°C
    • UV resistant: Yes — suitable for permanent outdoor exposure
    • Service life: 15-20 years outdoor
    • Key applications: Outdoor walkways, ramps, pool surrounds, covered entrance areas

Nitrile (NBR) Rubber Rolls — Oil and Fuel Resistant

The specified compound wherever oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid, or industrial chemicals are present. Nitrile rubber rolls resist swelling, softening, and degradation when in continuous contact with petroleum products. The standard specification for mechanics' garages, fuel stations, engineering workshops, food processing (non-food-contact zones), and chemical handling areas.

    • Oil resistance: Excellent (ASTM D471)
    • Fuel resistance: Excellent — suitable for petrol station forecourts
    • Key applications: Garages, workshops, fuel forecourts, engineering bays
    • Note: Not recommended for outdoor UV exposure — use neoprene for combined oil/UV

Natural Rubber Rolls — Maximum Grip

Highest coefficient of friction of any rubber compound — natural rubber (NR) rolls provide maximum traction in critical grip applications. Preferred for stable walkways, veterinary flooring, and applications where animals or humans must maintain grip on sloped wet surfaces. The compound of choice where grip performance is the absolute priority over cost.

    • Grip: Highest of all rubber compounds — typically COF 0.8-0.95 dry
    • Key applications: Stable matting, equestrian walkways, veterinary facilities, steps
    • Limitation: Degrades with oil and UV — indoor or sheltered use only

Surface Profiles — Which Pattern for Which Application

Profile Slip Rating (Wet) Best Applications Avoid For
Fine ribbed R11 / PTV 50+ Corridors, entrances, walkways, general commercial Wheeled equipment areas (ribs can catch wheels)
Wide ribbed R11 / PTV 50+ Heavy-traffic industrial, stable walkways Areas with fine debris (collects between ribs)
Studded / penny dot R11-R12 / PTV 55+ Industrial, outdoor, high-abuse areas Wheeled pallet equipment
Coin / checker plate R10-R11 / PTV 45+ Van floors, aesthetic commercial applications Very wet, oil-contaminated areas
Smooth R9 / PTV 36 Clean rooms, food grade, yoga/sports (dry) Any wet area — inadequate slip resistance
Open grid / drainage R12 / PTV 60+ Wet rooms, pool surrounds, wash bays, kitchens Fine debris areas, bare feet on grating
Anti-fatigue (domed/cushion) R10 / PTV 45+ Standing workstations, retail counters, kitchen prep Heavy vehicle traffic

Thickness Guide for Rubber Matting Rolls

    Thickness Applications Weight (approx)
3mm Protective overlays, electrical safety matting, lightweight entrance ~3.5 kg/m²
4-5mm General commercial corridors, light industrial, van liners ~5-6 kg/m²
6mm Workshop floors, entrance matting, ramp surfaces, outdoor (EPDM) ~7.5 kg/m²
8-10mm Gym cardio areas, heavy industrial walkways, forklift crossings ~10-12 kg/m²
    12-15mm Free-weight gym zones, stable walkways, heavy industrial anti-fatigue ~15-18 kg/m²
20-25mm Olympic lifting, outdoor safety surfacing, cow-cubicle systems ~24-30 kg/m²

Rubber Matting Roll Widths and Coverage

    Roll Width Best Applications
1.0m Narrow corridors, stairs, van floors (single strip), equipment bases
1.25m Standard commercial corridors, doorway entrances — most popular width
1.4m Wide corridors, doorway threshold covers
1.5m Workshop bays, gym sections, industrial walkways
2.0m Gym floors, wide industrial areas, stable aisles — fewest joins in large areas

How to Order Rubber Matting Rolls — Step by Step

    1. Measure your area — note the width and total length needed. For multiple runs, calculate each run separately.
    2. Choose your width — select the closest roll width that covers your area without joins (for narrow areas) or plan your layout if multiple strips are needed.
    3. Choose your compound — indoor = SBR. Outdoor = EPDM. Oil contact = nitrile. Outdoor with oil = neoprene.
    4. Choose your profile and thickness — use the tables above or call us for specific advice.
    5. Add the length to basket — rolls priced per linear metre. Add 10% for cutting waste on complex installations.
    6. Free UK delivery — all orders ship free to mainland UK. Rolls delivered flat-packed or on a reel depending on quantity.
