Updated June 2026 — Rubberco's rubber floor tiles combine the durability of industrial rubber with the flexibility of a tile format — no adhesive required, easy DIY installation, and simple to reconfigure or remove. Our rubber tiles are used in garages, gyms, workshops, stables and commercial premises across the UK.
| Thickness | Best Application | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8–10mm | Light gym, entrance areas, low-impact zones | Most economical; not for heavy weights |
| 15mm | Home gym, garage, general commercial | Best all-rounder for most applications |
| 20mm | CrossFit, Olympic lifting, heavy commercial | Maximum protection for heavy dropped weights |
No — Rubberco's interlocking rubber floor tiles are designed to be installed without adhesive. The interlocking edge profile locks tiles together securely. For permanent commercial installations, perimeter fixing or adhesive on the border tiles can be added, but most residential and home gym applications need no adhesive at all.
Yes, provided you specify EPDM rubber tiles. EPDM has excellent UV and ozone resistance and will not crack, harden or fade outdoors. Standard SBR rubber tiles are not suitable for outdoor use as UV exposure causes surface cracking and deterioration. Outdoor rubber tiles should have drainage holes or open profiles to prevent water pooling.
Rubber tiles up to 15mm can be scored and snapped using a sharp Stanley knife and straight edge — score deeply (3-4 passes), then flex and snap. For 20mm+ tiles, use a jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade, or a circular saw. For curved cuts, a jigsaw is essential. Always cut on a sacrificial surface to protect your floor.
Yes — the studded, ribbed or textured surface of rubber floor tiles provides excellent slip resistance, typically R10 or better (DIN 51130 classification). This makes them suitable for wet areas, workshops and any environment where slip safety is required. For particularly wet or oily environments, specify tiles with an open drainage profile for maximum grip.
Quality rubber floor tiles installed correctly typically last 15–25 years in normal use. Garage and workshop applications may see some surface wear in high-traffic zones, but this rarely affects function. The advantage of the tile format is that individual damaged tiles can be replaced without relaying the whole floor — making the effective lifespan much longer than roll or sheet flooring.
Standard rubber floor tiles are typically 500mm x 500mm or 1000mm x 1000mm. Some specialist formats are available in 600mm x 600mm or custom sizes. The 500x500mm format is most popular for home and small commercial applications; 1000mm tiles install faster in larger commercial spaces.

Calculating tile quantities is simple:
Example: Room 4m × 5m = 20m². Add 10% = 22m². Using 500mm tiles: 22 ÷ 0.25 = 88 tiles.
Yes — rubber floor tiles are specifically designed for this application. For treadmills, exercise bikes, and rowing machines, 10–15mm SBR tiles provide adequate impact absorption and protect the subfloor. For free weights (dumbbells to 20kg), 15mm tiles are recommended. For Olympic weightlifting and heavy barbell drops: 20mm tiles minimum, or a dedicated deadlift platform with 20mm rubber on 12mm OSB. Equipment with small contact points (cable machine base pads) should be fitted with rubber furniture pads to distribute point loads.
Standard black SBR rubber tiles are not suitable for food contact areas as they cannot be verified as food-safe compound. For food production, commercial kitchens, and catering areas, specify nitrile rubber tiles with a food-safe compound certification. Food-safe nitrile mats/tiles must be coloured (not black) in areas where HACCP requires visual detection of foreign material. Open-grid drainage designs are preferred in wet food areas.
New SBR rubber tiles made from recycled tyres have a characteristic rubber odour that dissipates within 2–4 weeks of installation in a ventilated space. The odour is from processing oils and sulphur compounds — not harmful in well-ventilated areas, but can be noticeable in unventilated spaces initially. To speed dissipation: ventilate the space well for the first few weeks, and consider washing tiles with a dilute baking soda solution before installation if odour is a concern. EPDM and nitrile tiles typically have much less odour than SBR.
Store rubber tiles flat or on edge, in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Rubber degrades under UV exposure and ozone — never store near motors, generators, or welding equipment (which produce ozone). Stack tiles no more than 20 tiles high to avoid compression set. If tiles have been stored on-edge for a long period, allow to acclimatise flat in a warm room for 24 hours before laying to ensure they sit flat.
