Updated June 2026 — Heavy duty rubber pond liners for UK gardens, commercial ponds, lakes and water features. EPDM and SBR. Free UK delivery.
A quality rubber pond liner is the foundation of any successful garden pond or water feature. Rubber pond liners outlast PVC alternatives by decades, flex and conform to irregular shapes, resist UV degradation, and are safe for fish and aquatic plants. Rubberco supplies professional-grade EPDM and SBR rubber pond liners to UK gardeners, landscape contractors, and water feature installers — cut to any size, with free UK delivery on all orders.
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is the gold standard for UK garden ponds. Key advantages:
Recycled SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) offers a more economical alternative for water-containment applications. Good general waterproofing properties, lower cost than EPDM. Not recommended for fish ponds (may contain compounds not safe for aquatic life). Suitable for ornamental water features, garden water management, and temporary installations.
Use the following formula to calculate the liner dimensions you need:
Example: A pond 3m long x 2m wide x 0.9m deep requires a liner of approximately 5.4m x 4.4m (3 + 1.8 + 0.6 = 5.4m; 2 + 1.8 + 0.6 = 4.4m).
Add 10–15% extra if your pond has complex shelves or irregular shapes.
| Thickness | Best For | Typical Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| 0.75mm | Small garden ponds, water features, raised beds | 15–25 years |
| 1.0mm | Standard garden ponds, koi ponds, most residential use | 25–35 years |
| 1.5mm | Large ponds, commercial water features, heavy-use applications | 35–50 years |
Rubber (EPDM) significantly outperforms PVC in UK pond applications. EPDM lasts 25–50 years vs 5–15 years for standard PVC; remains flexible in UK winters (no cold-weather cracking); is UV stable without additives; and is safe for fish. PVC liners are cheaper upfront but have a much shorter lifespan and become brittle and crack over time. For any permanent pond, EPDM rubber is the correct choice.
EPDM rubber pond liner is fish-safe. It is biologically inert and does not leach harmful chemicals into the water. Ensure you specify fish-safe EPDM (not EPDM roofing membrane which may contain fish-toxic plasticisers). All Rubberco EPDM pond liners are specified for aquatic use.
Yes — EPDM pond liner can be repaired with EPDM repair tape or patch adhesive kits. Small punctures and tears (under 50mm) are easily repaired. Drain the affected area, clean and dry thoroughly, and apply patch using EPDM contact adhesive. Repaired sections are typically as strong as the original liner material.
Large ponds may require joining multiple liner sheets. Join using EPDM seam tape (self-adhesive vulcanising tape) or two-part EPDM pond adhesive, applied with a minimum 150mm overlap. Ensure surfaces are clean and dry before joining. A properly made EPDM seam will be as watertight as the liner itself.
