What is acoustic underlay and how does it work?

Acoustic underlay is a resilient layer installed beneath flooring to reduce the transmission of sound between floors. Rubber acoustic underlay works by absorbing impact vibrations (footsteps, dropped objects) before they travel through the floor structure. High-density rubber compounds dissipate energy through mass and elasticity, achieving reductions of 15–28dB in impact noise — sufficient to meet UK Building Regulations Part E requirements for residential separating floors.

Which acoustic underlay do I need for laminate flooring?

For laminate flooring, a 3mm–5mm rubber acoustic underlay is the standard specification. The 3mm underlayment suits most domestic applications and provides up to 18dB impact noise reduction. Where Building Regs Part E compliance is required (e.g. purpose-built flats, conversions), step up to 5mm or 10mm Decimat underlay, which achieves up to 23–28dB reduction. All our rubber underlays are compatible with underfloor heating systems.

Can acoustic underlay be used under carpet?

Yes. Rubber acoustic underlay performs excellently under carpet and carpet tiles. It replaces traditional foam underlay while delivering superior sound insulation, greater durability, and resistance to compression set. What thickness acoustic underlay do I need?

Thickness depends on the acoustic performance required: 3mm provides up to 18dB impact noise reduction (suitable for most domestic floors); 5mm delivers improved isolation suitable for timber frame construction; 10mm Decimat achieves up to 23–28dB reduction and is specified for Part E compliance in residential conversions and new-build flats. Thicker underlay also provides better thermal insulation and sub-floor levelling.

Is rubber acoustic underlay compatible with underfloor heating?

Yes. All Rubberco rubber acoustic underlays are compatible with both wet (hydronic) and electric underfloor heating systems. Unlike foam underlay, rubber does not melt, degrade, or off-gas at the temperatures produced by UFH systems. The thermal resistance (tog) of our underlays is low enough to maintain UFH efficiency while still providing meaningful acoustic insulation.

Does acoustic underlay meet UK Building Regulations Part E?

Our 10mm Decimat acoustic underlay is specified to meet the impact sound requirements of UK Building Regulations Part E, which requires separating floors in residential buildings to achieve no more than 62dB L’nT,w (for new-build) or 64dB (for conversions). When used as part of a compliant floor build-up, our rubber underlays contribute the required ΔLw performance. Always verify the full floor build-up meets Part E with an acoustic consultant for your specific construction type.

Can acoustic underlay be cut to size?

Yes. All our acoustic rubber underlays can be cut to size using a sharp utility knife and straight edge. We also offer cut-to-size rolls on request — contact our team for non-standard widths or lengths. Rolls are available in standard widths of 1.0m and 1.4m, with lengths up to 10m or 20m depending on the product.

How is rubber acoustic underlay different from foam underlay?

Rubber acoustic underlay outperforms foam on every measurable metric: higher density means greater mass-based sound absorption; no compression set means consistent performance over decades; no off-gassing at UFH temperatures; suitable for heavy commercial foot traffic; and recyclable at end of life. Foam underlay degrades and compresses over 3–5 years, reducing its acoustic performance. Rubber underlay maintains consistent acoustic performance for the life of the floor.
