How to Use This Calculator

Getting an accurate measurement before you order rubber flooring prevents two common (and costly) mistakes: buying too little and running short mid-installation, or buying too much and wasting money. Here's how to use this tool correctly.

Step 1 — Measure Your Space

Use a tape measure to record the full length and width of your room or area in metres. For irregular spaces, break the shape into rectangles and add them together using the L-shape option.

Space Type Measuring Tip Recommended Wastage
Rectangular room Length × width, wall to wall 5–10%
L-shaped room or hallway Split into two rectangles, add together 10–15%
Garage / workshop Include floor drains and pillar spaces 10%
Horse stable Include door threshold and corner cuts 10–15%
Horse arena / manège Measure inside the perimeter fence/boards 15–20%
Playground / safety surface Include 1.5m fall zone around all equipment 15%
Industrial walkway Measure exact path width, allow for joins 10%
Commercial gym / fitness studio Include all equipment zones, not just open floor 10–15%

Step 2 — Choose the Right Wastage Allowance

Wastage accounts for cuts, joins, and fitting tolerances. We recommend:

  • 5% — Perfect rectangle, no cuts needed, interlocking tiles fitting wall-to-wall
  • 10% — Standard recommendation for most rooms and stables
  • 15% — L-shapes, rooms with alcoves, awkward angles
  • 20% — Arenas, round spaces, very complex layouts

When in doubt, add 10%. Left-over rubber matting is always useful — entrance mats, workshop corner pads, stable door thresholds.

Step 3 — Enter the Price per m²

Check the product page for the per-m² price. Most of our rubber flooring ranges from £8/m² to £35/m² depending on thickness, grade, and product type. Our calculator gives you a cost estimate both ex VAT and inc 20% UK VAT.

Rubber Tile Calculator: Working Out How Many Tiles You Need

If you're buying interlocking rubber tiles (the most common format for gyms, garages, and stables), use this quick conversion:

Tile Size m² per tile Tiles per 10m² Tiles per 20m²
500mm × 500mm 0.25 m² 40 tiles 80 tiles
600mm × 600mm 0.36 m² 28 tiles 56 tiles
1000mm × 1000mm 1.0 m² 10 tiles 20 tiles
1200mm × 1000mm 1.2 m² 9 tiles 17 tiles
2000mm × 1000mm (stable mat) 2.0 m² 5 mats 10 mats
3000mm × 1000mm (stable mat) 3.0 m² 4 mats 7 mats

Always round up — you can't fit half a tile, and having one extra is far better than being one short.

Common Rubber Flooring Measurement Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring in feet, ordering in metres (or vice versa): 1 metre = 3.28 feet. Our calculator works in metres only. Convert first.
  • Forgetting to include doorways: If you want flooring to continue under a door, measure to the outside of the door frame.
  • Not accounting for joined rolls: If your rubber roll is 1.2m wide but your space is 2.5m, you'll need two widths. The join adds waste.
  • Ignoring fixed obstacles: Pillars, drains, and permanent fixtures shouldn't be deducted — the rubber still needs to be cut around them, generating waste.
  • Ordering a single roll for an L-shaped room: This often results in awkward joins. Two smaller rolls can be easier to manage.
  • Ordering per-metre products by area: Some rubber rolls are sold per linear metre (width × price). Check whether the price shown is per m² or per linear metre.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate rubber flooring for a stable?

Measure your stable floor length × width. A standard 12ft × 12ft (3.65m × 3.65m) stable needs approximately 13.3m². With 10% wastage, order 14.6m² — that's 8 stable mats at 2m × 1m, which gives 16m² with good coverage and fitting flexibility. See our stable mats range.

How much rubber flooring do I need for a home gym?

A typical home gym (garage conversion) runs 4m × 6m = 24m². Add 10% wastage: order 26.4m². For a gym rubber tile at 1m × 1m, that's 27 tiles. For 500mm × 500mm tiles, you'd need 108 tiles. Browse gym flooring options.

How many rubber tiles do I need for a 5m × 5m room?

5m × 5m = 25m². With 10% wastage: 27.5m² needed. Using 1m × 1m tiles: 28 tiles. Using 500mm × 500mm tiles: 110 tiles.

How do I calculate rubber flooring for a playground?

Measure the play area plus a 1.5m fall zone around all equipment. A single piece of play equipment in a 4m × 4m space with 1.5m fall zones on all sides requires (4 + 3) × (4 + 3) = 7m × 7m = 49m². Add 15% wastage for cuts: order 56m².

Can I use this calculator for rubber rolls sold by the linear metre?

Yes — divide your area result by the roll width to get the linear metres needed. For example, 20m² ÷ 1.2m (roll width) = 16.7 linear metres. Round up to 17m.
