Reduce road noise and vibration in your vehicle, campervan, or motorhome with this large format rubber sound damping mat. Measuring 750mm x 500mm, this dense rubber sheet acts as a barrier layer between the metal body panels and the cabin interior, absorbing and deadening road noise, engine vibration, and resonance that would otherwise transmit directly into the living and driving space.
Why Rubber Sound Damping Works
Vehicle noise enters the cabin through two main pathways: airborne noise (sound waves through gaps and thin panels) and structure-borne noise (vibration transmitted through the vehicle body). Rubber is uniquely effective against structure-borne noise because its viscoelastic properties convert vibration energy into heat, dissipating it before it reaches the cabin interior.
This mat is designed for application to:
- Van floor panels and wheel arches (highest noise transmission areas)
- Side wall panels and door skins
- Bulkheads and firewall areas
- Campervan and motorhome floor installations under wood or vinyl flooring
- Under-floor layers in horse lorries and race car transporters
Product Specifications
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 750 x 500mm |
| Material | Dense rubber sound damping compound |
| Application | Vehicle floor, walls, wheel arches, bulkheads |
| Coverage per mat | 0.375m² |
| Format | Sheet/mat — cut to shape as required |
| Compatibility | Vans, campervans, motorhomes, horse lorries, commercial vehicles |
Key Features & Benefits
- Large 750x500mm format — covers floor and wall panels quickly with fewer pieces
- Dense rubber compound — high mass-per-area provides superior sound deadening versus foam alternatives
- Structure-borne noise reduction — targets road vibration, engine noise, and panel resonance
- Easy to cut and fit — trim with scissors or utility knife to fit wheel arches, floor channels, and irregular panels
- Compatible with most adhesives — bond to bare metal, cleaned surfaces using contact adhesive or specialist sound deadening adhesive
- Temperature stable — maintains performance across the temperature range experienced in UK vehicles year-round
- Odour-free when cured — does not off-gas in enclosed campervan interiors
Installation Guide
- Prepare surface: Remove any existing trim, clean bare metal with a degreaser, allow to dry
- Plan coverage: Focus on high-noise areas first — floor over wheel arches, rear floor panel, and bulkhead provide the greatest noise reduction per mat
- Cut to shape: Use the mat as a template, mark with chalk, cut with utility knife or scissors
- Apply adhesive: Apply contact adhesive to both surfaces; allow to become tacky
- Press firmly into position: Use a roller or firm pressure with a flat block to ensure full contact
- Allow to cure: 24 hours before driving
- Cover with flooring: Install van flooring, carpet, or vinyl over the damping layer
Tip: For maximum noise reduction, aim for 50–70% coverage of the floor area. Full coverage provides the best result but even partial coverage delivers noticeable improvement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much noise reduction can I expect?
Noise reduction varies with coverage and installation quality, but rubber sound damping mats typically reduce structure-borne road noise by 3–8 dB in van conversions — a perceptible and significant improvement in cabin comfort for long journeys.
What's the difference between rubber sound damping and foam insulation?
Rubber addresses structure-borne noise (vibration from the road and chassis). Foam insulation primarily addresses thermal performance and airborne sound. For comprehensive van acoustic treatment, use rubber damping as the first layer, topped with foam insulation and then your finish flooring.
Can this be used in a horse lorry?
Yes — rubber damping mats are widely used in horse lorry and race transporter conversions to reduce noise stress on animals during transit. The rubber is also urine-resistant for stable area applications.
