Can You Use Rubber Matting Outside? UK Outdoor Guide 2026

Can You Use Rubber Matting Outside?

Yes — rubber matting can be used outside, provided the correct rubber compound is specified. EPDM rubber is UV-stable, weatherproof, frost-resistant, and maintains its properties indefinitely outdoors — making it the recommended choice for permanent external rubber flooring. SBR rubber is suitable for covered outdoor areas but degrades with prolonged direct UV exposure. All rubber matting is waterproof, non-absorbent, and performs well in the UK's wet climate.

EPDM vs SBR for Outdoor Use

Property EPDM Rubber SBR Rubber
UV stability Excellent — no degradation Poor — yellows and hardens over time
Colourfast outdoors Yes — colours remain vibrant No — SBR is typically black/dark only
Frost resistance Excellent Good
Waterproof Fully waterproof Fully waterproof
Suitable for covered outdoor areas Yes Yes
Suitable for uncovered outdoor areas Yes Only short-term / temporary
Typical outdoor lifespan 15–25 years 5–10 years outdoors (uncovered)
Price £15–45/m² £4–15/m²

Best Outdoor Applications for Rubber Matting

Playground Safety Surfaces

EPDM rubber tiles and wet-pour rubber are the standard surfaces for UK playground safety areas. They comply with BS EN 1177 (impact attenuation of surfacing), providing critical fall height protection required under playground safety regulations. Available in bright, UV-stable colours.

Garden Paths and Patios

Rubber grass mats and EPDM rubber tiles are popular for garden paths, patio areas, and hardstanding around sheds and summerhouses. Permeable rubber grass mats allow water and airflow through to the soil beneath — ideal for creating firm walking surfaces while preserving grass underneath.

Stable and Paddock Areas

Heavy-duty rubber mats are widely used for outdoor stable yard areas, paddock gateways, and horse trailer loading ramps. Anti-slip ribbed rubber prevents horse slipping on wet concrete yards. Rubber grass mats prevent poaching at high-traffic paddock gateways.

Commercial and Industrial Outdoor Areas

Loading bays, yard ramps, outdoor steps, and external walkways all benefit from anti-slip rubber matting. Heavy-duty ribbed rubber in 6–10mm is the standard for external commercial walkway applications.

Sports and Leisure Areas

Outdoor gym areas, trim trails, fitness parks, and multi-use games areas (MUGAs) use EPDM rubber safety tiles and rolls for impact protection, all-weather anti-slip performance, and durability.

Installation Tips for Outdoor Rubber Matting

  • Drainage is critical: Ensure the substrate has adequate falls to drain water away. Standing water beneath rubber tiles can heave them in frost or cause biological growth
  • Use outdoor-grade adhesive: For glued installations, use a polyurethane or epoxy adhesive rated for external use. Standard contact adhesives may fail outdoors
  • Edge trims: Secure all exposed edges with rubber-to-concrete edge trims to prevent lifting, UV degradation of exposed cut faces, and trip hazards
  • Leave expansion gaps: Rubber expands in heat. Leave 5mm expansion gaps at fixed edges for outdoor installations, sealed with UV-stable silicone

Frequently Asked Questions

Can rubber matting be left out in winter?

Yes — both EPDM and SBR rubber are frost-resistant and can remain outdoors throughout the UK winter. Rubber does not absorb water so it does not crack from freeze-thaw cycles like concrete or stone. EPDM rubber is rated to –40°C. SBR rubber becomes stiffer in very cold temperatures but does not crack or degrade from frost alone.

Does rubber matting get slippery when wet outdoors?

Quality outdoor rubber matting with a textured surface (ribbed, studded, or profiled) maintains excellent slip resistance when wet. Look for outdoor rubber matting rated R11 or above under DIN 51130. Smooth rubber surfaces can be slippery when wet — always specify a textured surface for outdoor applications. EPDM playground tiles are tested to BS EN 1177 for both wet and dry conditions.

Can rubber mats be used on decking?

Yes — rubber matting can be used on timber decking. Non-slip rubber decking strips or rubber-backed mats provide grip on wet decking, where the smooth or grooved timber surface becomes very slippery in rain. Use rubber mats with an open-drainage base or with drainage channels to prevent moisture trapping between the rubber and the timber deck surface.
