How to Calculate Rubber Flooring
Step 1: Measure Your Room
For rectangular rooms, the calculation is simple:
Area (m²) = Length (m) x Width (m)
For L-shaped rooms, split into two rectangles, calculate each area, then add them together.
Step 2: Add Wastage
Always order slightly more than your calculated area to allow for:
- Cutting around edges and obstacles
- Offcuts and fitting adjustments
- Future repairs or replacements
| Room Type | Add Wastage Of |
|---|---|
| Simple rectangular room (rolls) | 5–10% |
| Complex shape / lots of cuts | 10–15% |
| Interlocking tiles (simple room) | 5% |
| Interlocking tiles (complex room) | 10% |
| Diagonal tile laying pattern | 15–20% |
Step 3: Convert to Roll Length
Rubber rolls are sold by the linear metre. To convert your area requirement to linear metres:
Linear Metres Required = Area (m²) ÷ Roll Width (m)
Rubberco rolls are typically available in 1m or 1.2m widths (check individual product pages).
Quick Reference: Room Size to Rubber Flooring Requirement
| Room Dimensions | Area (m²) | With 10% Wastage | Linear Metres (1m roll) | Linear Metres (1.2m roll) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2m x 3m | 6 m² | 6.6 m² | 6.6 lm | 5.5 lm |
| 3m x 4m | 12 m² | 13.2 m² | 13.2 lm | 11 lm |
| 4m x 5m | 20 m² | 22 m² | 22 lm | 18.3 lm |
| 5m x 6m | 30 m² | 33 m² | 33 lm | 27.5 lm |
| 6m x 8m | 48 m² | 52.8 m² | 52.8 lm | 44 lm |
| 8m x 10m | 80 m² | 88 m² | 88 lm | 73.3 lm |
| 10m x 12m | 120 m² | 132 m² | 132 lm | 110 lm |
How Much Rubber Flooring for Common Applications?
Home Gym / Garage Gym
- Small home gym (3m x 4m): ~14m² with wastage — approx 14 linear metres of 1m roll
- Single garage (5m x 3m): ~17m² with wastage — approx 17 linear metres of 1m roll
- Double garage (5m x 6m): ~34m² with wastage — approx 34 linear metres of 1m roll
For gym use, we recommend minimum 8mm thickness. For Olympic lifting or heavy weights, go for 15–20mm.
Horse Stable
Standard 12ft x 12ft (3.65m x 3.65m) stable = approx 13.3m²
Standard stable mats are 6ft x 4ft (1.83m x 1.22m) = 2.23m² per mat
Mats required = 13.3 ÷ 2.23 = 6 mats (order 7 to allow for cutting)
For larger loose boxes (14x14 ft = 16.5m²): order 8–9 mats.
School / Playground Safety Surfacing
Measure the fall zone area around each piece of equipment (not just the footprint). The HSE/BS EN 1177 standard requires safety surfacing to extend a minimum distance from equipment based on the critical fall height.
- For a swing set with 2m fall height: safety zone extends ~2m beyond equipment footprint on all sides
- Always add 15% wastage for playground tiles due to cutting around edges and equipment bases
Shop Playground Safety Tiles (BS EN 1177 certified)
Warehouse / Industrial Floor
For large areas, request a free measurement consultation from Rubberco. Key considerations:
- Which areas need covering? (walkways only, or full floor?)
- Are there floor drains to work around?
- Are there vehicle traffic routes (require heavier gauge)?

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I measure in metres or feet?
Rubberco sells by the metre. If your room is measured in feet, use this conversion: 1 foot = 0.305 metres. Multiply your feet dimensions by 0.305 to get metres.
Do I need to glue rubber flooring down?
For most domestic and light commercial applications, rubber flooring lies flat under its own weight without adhesive. For permanent commercial installations or areas with heavy wheeled traffic, we recommend adhesive bonding. Contact us for advice.
Can I get offcuts?
Yes — Rubberco offers cut-to-size service on all rolls. If you need an unusual dimension, contact us and we'll cut your order exactly to size.
What if my room isn't a perfect rectangle?
Draw your room to scale on paper. Divide it into rectangles. Calculate each rectangle separately, add the areas together, then add 10–15% wastage. For complex irregular shapes, it's best to contact us with your dimensions and we'll advise the most efficient way to order.
