Types of Pond Liner Available from Rubberco
HDPE Pond Liner (High-Density Polyethylene)
HDPE is the most durable and longest-lasting pond liner material. It offers a 40-year guarantee, outstanding UV resistance, high puncture resistance and excellent chemical resistance. HDPE is the liner of choice for large wildlife ponds, koi ponds, commercial water features and fish farming.
Thickness available: 0.5mm, 0.75mm, 1.0mm | Guarantee: 40 years
EPDM Pond Liner
EPDM rubber is the most flexible pond liner — it drapes around complex shapes, folds without creasing and is fish safe. It is the professional landscaper's choice for garden ponds, wildlife ponds and water features with irregular shapes. EPDM remains flexible at temperatures down to -40°C.
Thickness available: 0.75mm, 1.0mm | Guarantee: 20–25 years | Fish safe: Yes
LDPE Pond Liner (Low-Density Polyethylene)
LDPE is the most economical flexible pond liner. It is lighter and easier to handle than HDPE, with good UV resistance and flexibility. Suitable for smaller garden ponds, raised beds and water retention applications where long-term performance is less critical.
Thickness available: 0.35mm, 0.5mm | Guarantee: 10–15 years
Butyl Pond Liner
Butyl rubber is the traditional premium pond liner — extremely flexible, fish safe and proven over decades. It is heavier and more expensive than HDPE or EPDM but is preferred for complex shapes, water gardens and koi ponds where zero risk of liner failure is paramount.
Thickness available: 0.75mm, 1.0mm | Guarantee: 20 years | Fish safe: Yes

How to Calculate the Pond Liner Size You Need
Use this simple formula to calculate the liner size required:
Width of liner = Pond width + (2 × max depth) + 0.6m overlap
Length of liner = Pond length + (2 × max depth) + 0.6m overlap
Example: For a pond 3m long × 2m wide × 0.8m deep:
Liner length = 3 + (2 × 0.8) + 0.6 = 5.2m
Liner width = 2 + (2 × 0.8) + 0.6 = 4.2m
Always round up to the nearest standard size. The 0.6m overlap (0.3m each side) provides sufficient material to anchor the liner at the pond edge and allow for any minor measurement inaccuracies.
Pond Liner Installation Guide
- Excavate and shape the pond — remove any sharp stones, roots or debris that could puncture the liner
- Install underlay — lay geotextile underlay (or old carpet) on all surfaces before the liner to protect against puncture from below
- Unfold the liner — on a warm day (liner is more flexible in the warmth); position centrally over the excavation
- Press into shape — gently press liner into the pond shape, making neat folds at corners; do not stretch tightly
- Fill with water slowly — as water fills, the weight eases the liner into the contours; adjust folds as you go
- Trim and secure edges — once filled, trim the overlap to 300mm and secure under paving slabs, turf or timber edging
Frequently Asked Questions
Which pond liner is best for koi?
For koi ponds, HDPE (0.75mm or 1.0mm) or Butyl rubber are the best choices. Both are fully fish safe, highly puncture resistant and long lasting. HDPE offers a 40-year guarantee and excellent UV resistance. Butyl is more flexible and easier to work with around complex shapes. Avoid thin LDPE liners for koi ponds — koi are strong fish and can damage thinner liners by spawning activity and their natural foraging behaviour.
How long does a pond liner last?
HDPE pond liners carry a 40-year guarantee and routinely last 30 to 50 years when correctly installed with underlay. EPDM and Butyl liners are guaranteed for 20 to 25 years. LDPE liners are guaranteed for 10 to 15 years. The main causes of early failure are puncture (prevented by good underlay), UV degradation at exposed edges (prevented by covering the overlap), and freeze-thaw damage in very shallow ponds.
Do I need an underlay under my pond liner?
Yes — underlay is strongly recommended for all pond liner installations. It protects the liner from puncture by stones, gravel and root growth from below, and significantly extends liner life. Geotextile underlay (non-woven polypropylene fleece) is the professional choice. Old carpet is an acceptable budget alternative for small garden ponds. Never lay a pond liner directly onto bare earth in a stony or clay soil without underlay.
Can I join two pieces of pond liner?
Yes — HDPE and LDPE liners can be joined using specialist pond liner tape or welded using a hot-air welder (for large installations). EPDM liners can be joined with EPDM bonding tape and primer, giving a watertight seam. For garden ponds, ordering the liner in a single piece large enough to cover the entire pond is always preferable to jointing — seams are potential weak points even when correctly made.
