Outdoor matting in the UK must withstand rain, frost, UV exposure, and heavy foot traffic year-round. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber is the material of choice — UV-stable, freeze-thaw resistant, and built to last 15–20 years with minimal maintenance.
| Thickness | Application | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6–8mm | Pedestrian entrance areas, doorsteps | Good for low-traffic residential use |
| 10–12mm | Ramps, cycle paths, commercial entrances | Wheeled traffic and trolleys |
| 15–20mm | Outdoor gyms, fitness trails, play areas | Cushioning and slip protection for active use |
| 20–25mm+ | Car parks, vehicle crossings, loading bays | Heavy vehicle rated |
| Material | Lifespan | Slip Resistance | UV Stable | Frost Resistant |

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber is the correct compound for UK outdoor use. EPDM is UV-stabilised, ozone-resistant, and performs reliably from -40°C to +120°C, making it unaffected by freeze-thaw cycles common in UK winters. SBR rubber degrades outdoors within 2–3 years due to UV oxidation — avoid SBR for any outdoor application.
For outdoor areas, HSE recommends a minimum Pendulum Test Value (PTV) of 36 or higher in wet conditions. Studded and ribbed EPDM rubber profiles typically achieve PTV 55–65 wet — well above the HSE minimum. This corresponds to R11 (DIN 51130) or Class C (BS 7976-2).
Yes — EPDM rubber matting is engineered for permanent outdoor installation. It will not rot, rust, absorb water, or degrade from UV exposure. Typical outdoor service life is 15–20 years for EPDM rubber matting. The only maintenance required is periodic cleaning to prevent algae build-up in shaded areas.
For pedestrian outdoor areas: 6–10mm. For ramps and areas with wheeled traffic: 10–15mm. For outdoor gym and fitness areas: 15–20mm EPDM. For heavy vehicle crossings (car parks, access roads): 20–25mm reinforced EPDM.
Yes. EPDM rubber matting with a studded or ribbed surface is commonly used on disabled access ramps throughout the UK. It meets the anti-slip requirements of the Equality Act 2010 and BS 8300 for accessible design when installed with appropriate edge protection.
Clean with a stiff outdoor brush and diluted bleach solution (1:10 ratio) or specialist outdoor matting cleaner 2–3 times per year. Regular cleaning prevents algae and moss build-up. UV-exposed areas tend to stay cleaner than shaded sections. Anti-algae biocide sprays are also available for persistent growth.
Yes — outdoor rubber tiles or matting can be laid directly on decking boards. Ensure there is adequate drainage beneath the mat to prevent moisture build-up. Interlocking EPDM tiles are ideal for decking as they can be removed and reinstated for deck maintenance.
Heavy rubber rolls and thick tiles (10mm+) generally stay in place without fixing, especially in sheltered areas. In exposed locations or on slopes, use outdoor rubber adhesive or stainless steel fixings for permanent installation. Entrance mats should always be secured in doorways where people may catch the edge.
Our outdoor matting range has been updated for summer 2026 with new EPDM-compound tiles in slate-grey, terracotta, and dark green finishes — the first time we have offered colour options in interlocking outdoor tiles. Standard black remains available and is priced lower. New colour tiles are in stock for immediate dispatch.
We have also added a new heavy-duty anti-fatigue outdoor mat rated for market stall, outdoor kitchen, and festival ground use — featuring an open drainage grid construction that prevents pooling and remains comfortable under foot for 8+ hour standing periods. See the full anti-fatigue mats collection for indoor and outdoor options.
