What Is Industrial Rubber Flooring?

Industrial rubber flooring is heavy-duty flooring manufactured from natural rubber, synthetic rubber (SBR, EPDM, NBR, neoprene) or recycled rubber compounds, engineered to withstand the demands of commercial and industrial environments. Unlike domestic flooring, industrial variants are formulated to resist:

  • Heavy foot traffic and wheeled loads (forklifts, pallet trucks)
  • Oils, greases, chemicals and solvents
  • Extreme temperatures and UV exposure
  • Impact from dropped tools or equipment
  • Sustained compression without permanent deformation

The result is a floor surface that protects both your workers and your building substrate — reducing accidents, lowering maintenance costs, and extending the life of your facility's infrastructure.

Types of Industrial Rubber Flooring

Rubber Rolls

Available in widths of 1m to 2m and lengths up to 10m or more, rubber matting rolls are the most cost-effective solution for covering large floor areas. Ideal for factory floors, sports halls and warehouse aisles. Typically 3mm–12mm thick, with coin, ribbed, stud or smooth surface profiles. SBR rolls made from recycled rubber are the most economical option; EPDM or nitrile rolls offer enhanced chemical and UV resistance.

Interlocking Rubber Tiles

Modular tiles that click together without adhesive — perfect for temporary installations, equipment bays, or areas where you may need to remove flooring for maintenance. Interlocking rubber tiles are available in 500mm x 500mm or 1m x 1m formats at thicknesses from 10mm to 30mm. Ideal for gymnasiums, garages, workshops and loading bays.

Rubber Sheets

Cut-to-size rubber sheeting is supplied in standard widths and can be cut to any length. Used extensively in food production environments (food-grade nitrile), electrical substations (dielectric rubber), and chemical plants (neoprene or EPDM). Thicknesses range from 1.5mm to 50mm+ depending on application.

Industrial Rubber Matting

Anti-fatigue matting, drainage matting, entrance matting and link matting all fall under the industrial matting umbrella. These purpose-specific products target ergonomic hazards, wet-area drainage, or contamination control at building entrances.

Key Applications

Factories and Manufacturing Plants

High-impact, oil-resistant rubber flooring protects concrete floors from machinery vibration, chemical spills and heavy traffic. SBR and nitrile compounds are widely used. Anti-fatigue matting at assembly stations reduces worker musculoskeletal fatigue and increases productivity.

Warehouses and Distribution Centres

Rubber aisle runners and dock leveller pads absorb forklift vibration, reduce tyre noise and provide slip resistance in areas where condensation or goods residues create wet surfaces. Heavy-duty studded rubber with load ratings up to 6 tonnes per wheel is available for high-traffic routes.

Workshops and Garages

Oil-resistant nitrile rubber tiles or rolls prevent the absorption of motor oils, cutting fluids and hydraulic fluids into concrete — eliminating staining and reducing fire risk. Interlocking tiles allow drainage channels to remain accessible.

Loading Bays and Dock Areas

Dock bumpers and loading bay ramp covers are typically moulded from dense, impact-resistant SBR or natural rubber. Floor matting in dock areas must tolerate both rubber-wheeled pallet jacks and occasional vehicular loads.

Food Production Environments

NSF/FDA-compliant food-grade nitrile or EPDM rubber is essential in any area where direct or indirect food contact is possible. These materials resist vegetable oils, animal fats and cleaning agents including sodium hypochlorite, and are impervious to bacteria harbouring in surface cracks. Smooth or embossed drainage profiles ensure no standing water.

HSE Regulations and Slip Resistance Standards

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) mandates that workplace floors must be suitable for purpose and free from hazards that could cause slips, trips or falls (Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, Regulation 12). Slip resistance is measured by the Pendulum Test Value (PTV) and the German R-rating system widely used across Europe:

R-Rating PTV Range Slip Risk Typical Application
R9 PTV 27-35 Low (dry conditions) Office areas, dry stores
R10 PTV 36-44 Medium (occasional wet) Light industrial, garages
R11 PTV 45-54 Medium-High (wet) Workshops, loading bays
R12 PTV 55-64 High (wet/greasy) Commercial kitchens, food production
R13 PTV 65+ Very High (extreme risk) Chemical plants, slaughterhouses

Always consult your risk assessment. For wet or contaminated environments, HSE guidance recommends a minimum PTV of 36 (R10). Most of our industrial rubber flooring ranges achieve R10-R12 as standard.

Chemical and Oil Resistance — Choosing the Right Compound

Rubber Compound Best For Avoid With
SBR (Styrene-Butadiene) General industrial use, recycled economy floors Oils, fuels, solvents
Nitrile (NBR) Oil, fuel, grease resistance — workshops, garages Strong acids, ozone exposure
EPDM UV/ozone/weather resistance, hot water, steam Petroleum oils, fuels
Neoprene (CR) Moderate oil/chemical resistance, outdoor use Aromatic solvents
Natural Rubber (NR) High tear strength, dynamic loads, vibration damping Petroleum, sunlight, ozone
Viton (FKM) Extreme chemical/heat resistance Cost-sensitive applications

For mixed environments — such as a workshop where both oils and water are present — nitrile is typically the best all-round choice. Contact our technical team if your environment involves unusual chemicals.

Installation Methods

Loose Lay

Suitable for rolls and heavy tiles where the product's own weight keeps it in place. No adhesive required — ideal for temporary installations or areas requiring frequent access underneath flooring. Edges can be secured with aluminium trim or cable-management edging strips.

Self-Adhesive

Peel-and-stick backing is factory-applied to some rubber tile products. Provides a permanent bond to concrete, screed or existing hard floors. Not recommended where flooring may need replacing without substrate damage.

Adhesive Bonded (Full Bed)

For permanent, commercial-grade installations, full-bed adhesive bonding using contact adhesive or pressure-sensitive adhesive is recommended. Provides maximum stability and prevents edge lifting under heavy traffic. Substrate must be clean, dry, primed and level to within 3mm over 3m.

Interlocking and Click Systems

Modular tiles with jigsaw, tab-and-slot or straight-edge interlocking profiles require no adhesive and can be installed on any hard, level surface. Installation time is drastically reduced and tiles can be individually replaced if damaged.

Maintenance and Cleaning

One of rubber flooring's major commercial advantages is ease of maintenance. Follow these guidelines to maximise service life:

  • Daily: Sweep or vacuum to remove grit and debris. Fine particulates act as abrasives and accelerate surface wear.
  • Weekly: Mop with a neutral pH cleaner diluted in warm water. Avoid strongly alkaline or acidic cleaners which degrade rubber over time.
  • Periodic: For heavily soiled industrial floors, a rotary scrubber with a soft-medium pad will restore surface appearance without abrading the rubber surface.
  • Avoid: Solvent-based cleaners (acetone, white spirit) on SBR or natural rubber. Bleach at high concentrations will degrade most rubber grades over time. High-pressure steam cleaning is not recommended for bonded installations.
  • Oils and Spills: Absorb immediately with dry compound or paper. Follow with neutral detergent wash. For nitrile rubber, most petroleum oils can be cleaned with warm soapy water without long-term damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of rubber flooring do I need for a factory floor?

For general pedestrian areas in factories, 3mm-6mm SBR roll is typically sufficient. For areas with heavy wheeled traffic (pallet trucks, forklifts), specify 6mm-10mm heavy-duty studded rubber. Anti-fatigue matting at workstations should be 12mm-20mm for effective ergonomic benefit.

Is rubber flooring suitable for food production areas?

Yes — but you must specify food-grade nitrile or EPDM rubber. These compounds are free from plasticisers and additives that could contaminate food, and they resist the detergents and disinfectants used in food environments. Ensure joints are sealed or use large-format sheets to minimise bacterial harbourage points.

How do I know what slip resistance rating I need?

Conduct a risk assessment per HSE guidance. Wet areas with occasional contamination require a minimum PTV of 36 (R10). Commercial kitchens and food production areas typically require R11-R12. For specialist chemical or biological contamination risk, R12-R13 is recommended. We can provide test certificates for all our products on request.

Can rubber flooring be installed over existing tiles or concrete?

Yes, in most cases. The substrate must be clean, structurally sound, dry and as level as possible. For bonded installations, prime porous substrates before applying adhesive. Interlocking or loose-lay products can be placed directly over most existing hard floors without surface preparation.

How long does industrial rubber flooring last?

In commercial environments with regular maintenance, quality rubber flooring typically lasts 10-25 years. SBR rolls in high-abrasion areas may need replacement after 5-10 years. Nitrile and EPDM products in appropriate environments can exceed 20 years of service life.

Do you offer bespoke cutting or custom sizes?

Yes. Rubber sheeting can be supplied cut to your exact dimensions. Rolls can be cut to specified lengths. For large bespoke orders, contact us for a custom quote including delivery to your site.
